Welcome to our world's kitchen!
Thursday, June 18, 2015 - Extended Day.
Mill City Museum. We learned about the Washburn Crosby Mill, which was owned by General Mills. This was once the largest flour mill in the world!
It was a beautiful day - and the kids were awesome! A special "thank you" to our chaperones - Sophie, Nicole, and Jo! They made it a fun and safe experience for all of us.

Thursday, June 18, 2015 - EXTENDED DAY PLANS!
We are going on a field trip to the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis. Our bus will be leaving immediately at 8:30 a.m. While at the Mill City Museum, we will tour the Flower Tower, watch "Minneapolis in 19 Minutes", tour the exhibits, and have lunch. Please be sure to send a lunch with your child, as there isn't a place to purchase food at the museum. There is a gift shop, so it is ok to send spending money with your child...if you choose to do so. If your child has a Project Seek t-shirt, we would appreciate it if they would wear it. |

Wednesday, June 17, 2015 - Poland We traveled to Poland today! We watched a video on Poland, and talked about how its location affected the people and culture...and therefore the food. Our recipe today was for a Potato, Egg, and Cream Casserole called Kartoflana. After snack, I made Pierogie for the kids to try. I fried them in butter, onions, and bacon. Most of the kids liked the pierogie, some were a little freaked out by the noodle texture. I am so proud of ALL of them trying new things....with NO complaints! All of the students enjoyed their potato casserole. |

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 - Germany!
Guten Tag!
We shook things up today and made TWO recipes...one before snack, and one after snack. The kids kept commenting that they thought they were in an episode of "Cutthroat Kitchen"! :)
As soon as the students arrived, we made soft German pretzels. Since it was 8:30 a.m., we brushed them with butter and sprinkled cinnamon sugar on each pretzel. I explained to the students that these are also delicious if you sprinkle them with coarse sea salt and then dip them in melted cheese!
After snack, we made apple strudel! We had MANY visitors to our room today - each commenting on the delicious smells that were out in our hallway. We were really rushed for time - but the kids pulled through, and I was sprinkling powdered sugar on their finished product as they were packaging it up to take home.

Welcome to Jolly Old England!
My husband, Graeme, was kind enough to come to our class this morning and talk about his homeland. He was born and raised in Northumberland, in Northeast England (right on the Scottish border).
He talked to the kids about food, sports, castles, cars, the language difference, and Harry Potter. :)
After he left, we made Cornish Pasties! Pasties are a meat pie that were a handheld meal for the miners. Their hands were always dirty (and full of toxic stuff like asbestos), so they held onto the thick crust and then threw that part away.

Friday, June 12, 2015 - Sweden!
Hej (Hey! or Hi!)
We learned about Sweden today. We talked about our heritages, and why the Swedish/Scandinavians chose this area of Minnesota to settle. We watched a quick video about Sweden and the landscape, and noticed that it looks a lot like Minnesota. We talked about the Dala horses that we see around Chisago County - and some of the foods that are a tradition in some of your households.
We made Swedish Tea Ring. Some of the kids were kind of disappointed - they thought that Tea ring would have tea in it. I explained that it was just the name...similar to "Coffee Cake" which doesn't have coffee in it! Once they heard it was a pastry with cream cheese, they were all excited again! :)

Thursday, June 11, 2015 - Day 1
Welcome to All Around the World's Kitchen! This year, once again, my daughter (Sophie) and I will be teaching your children to keep an open mind, and an open stomach to try new tastes. We might not like everything we try, but some things that we "THINK" we hate might become new favorites!
On this first day we made passports to enable us to travel around the world and learn about new countries, customs, and foods. We decorated our aprons, and got to know each other.
After snack, we did a taste test. I wanted the kids to keep an open mind before jumping to conclusions on which item they thought was the name-brand item, and which was the generic. I think a few of the kids were surprised that the results! They learned not to jump to conclusions about food - but to use ALL of their senses when it comes to trying foods. Our sight, touch, taste, smell...and yes, sometimes hearing can come into play when we are eating.
