Welcome to Dissections
June 11th
On the first day of class we discussed lab safety, classification of animals, and the Echinoderm Phylum. The class learned two mnemonics that would help them learn classification of animals including the classification rap. Our dissection was a starfish. The class viewed Presentations about the phylum and watched a few videos of starfish in action. Mr. Boxrud demonstrated the dissection and the students then dissected.
June 12th
Today we demonstrated and dissected an earthworm.
June 15th
In order to learn about squids before dissecting them, today class began with a lesson on squids. We labeled body parts on a diagram and watched a short video about dissecting and preparing them to be made into sushi. We learned the kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species of squid in order to know how they are classified. After students learned about squid and passed a mini quiz on what they had learned they were ready to dissect them as shown in the slideshow below. Students did a great job dissecting and following directions in order to explore and better learn about squids as they were dissecting. They asked many questions and were really engaged in the process.
June 16th
The leopard frog dissetion was demonstrated and completed today.
June 17th
Today we dissected a bullfrog, learned DNA basics, and did DNA coloring from the Biology Coloring book.
June 18th
The clam dissection was performed today and we also started working on a paper DNA.
June 22nd
We completed our paper DNA's today, dissected a grasshopper, and got ready to do the dogfish shark dissection scheduled for tomorrow.
June 23rd
Today was a big day in class as we dissected the dogfish shark, which is a favorite of the students. Students enjoyed dissecting their sharks and even had many spectators as other classes flocked to watch a bit of the dissection process and see the sharks. The sharks had tough skin, so many of the students struggled a bit to make their initial cuts, but with a little help they were able to complete their dissections. As always, before students could participate and begin their dissections they performed a mini oral quiz to show that they knew the parts of the shark and how it is classified. After the questions were answered the students were ready and excited to begin their dissections.
June 24th
We dissected an ascaris roundworm today.
June 25th
Fetal pig dissection today.
June 26th
We will attend the Shakespeare's Kid's play today, play some habitat game, and do final cleanup.
